Emergency Preparedness Handbooks for Hawke’s Bay Lifestyle Blocks.

Living on a lifestyle block comes with added responsibilities when it comes to dealing with potential hazard.

Hawkes Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management (HBCDEM) has launched its new Emergency Preparedness Handbook for Lifestyle Blocks.

HBCDEM Team Leader - Community Engagement - Audrey Tolua highlights the importance of this handbook, saying “During Cyclone Gabrielle our lifestyle block owners were affected, as they can easily become isolated during a large-scale event”.

As such “The Lifestyle Block Emergency Handbook was developed to give advice and help before, during and after an emergency”.

This handbook gives those living on lifestyle blocks practical, detailed information on how to prepare, plan and recover from emergencies.

The handbook outlines a number of steps to better prepare lifestyle block owners to make emergency plans for people, property, and animals. 

Other topics covered include insurance, water storage, power outages, phone outages, first aid kits for humans and animals, and dealing with diseases and pandemics.

HBCDEM continues to support conversations around emergency resilience planning and community emergency hubs within urban and rural communities.

The handbook has been developed in collaboration HBCDEM, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Rural Support, Farmers Mutual Group, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
