Afternoon tea for 1931 earthquake survivors

Earthquake Survivors Afternoon Tea 0056

The annual afternoon tea for survivors of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake will be held on Sunday, 3 February, marking the 88th anniversary of one of New Zealand’s most devastating natural disasters.

Napier City Councillor Kirsten Wise, who chairs the organising group, said the event was a special occasion for people who survived the life-changing 7.8-magnitude quake.

“The afternoon tea is our way of paying tribute to a very special group of people, where they can meet up with old friends and share memories of the day that shaped the lives of so many,” Ms Wise said.

“It’s a lovely way to remember that fateful day, and to be thankful for the strength and efforts of those who worked tirelessly to rebuild our region.”

The event, now in its 19th year, will be held at Napier Boys’ High School from 2pm to 4pm, and will feature earthquake engineering risk specialist Andrew King from GNS Science as a guest speaker.

Earthquake survivors who have previously attended should have received their invitations before Christmas.

Anyone who has changed address, or who has not previously attended and would like to be invited, can contact Hawke’s Bay Regional Council on 06 835 9200.

The afternoon tea is for people who experienced the 1931 earthquake and is one of two anniversary commemorations.

The other will be the public ceremony at the foot of the clock tower in central Hastings, starting at 10.30am on Sunday, 3 February.

The survivors afternoon tea is jointly organised by Napier City Council, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Art Deco Trust, New Zealand Red Cross and Napier Boys’ High School.

They appreciate the generous support from local businesses and organisations that sponsor food and equipment.
